The Sun might be 400 times bigger than the Moon, but since it is also around 400 times further away, they appear the same size in our sky.
Sometimes, the pair will overlap in the sky so that the Earth sits in the Moon’s shadow – known as a solar eclipse. The next partial solar eclipse visible from the UK will take place on March 29, 2025, when 30% to 40% of the Sun’s rays will be blocked. The eclipse will begin at around 10.07am UK time, and end at 12.00pm.
All of the UK should be able to see the partial solar eclipse – if the sky is clear! Experts warn to never look directly at the Sun or a solar eclipse without appropriate eye protection, so it’s important to make plans to view the solar eclipse safely.
Longridge Library will have special glasses available for you to drop in and see the event from there. Please note: there are plenty of pairs but some sharing might be necessary, depending on numbers.
